Meet Jade!

Written by Site Admin on . Posted in Uncategorized

Meet the lovely Jade Crawford age 16 from Somersham who has been doing work experience at the Day Centre since October as part of the Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care she is studying at Parkside Sixth Form College in Cambridge. The Health & Social Care unit of her Diploma included completing at least 100 hours of work experience in the field and isn’t the Day Centre lucky that she selected us to do this with? As well as the unit in Health & Social Care, Jade also has to study units in the care of mild dementia, safe practice in social care and mental health needs. She is particularly enjoying her work experience at the Day Centre as it has given her practical experience in aspects of social care of the frail and elderly. Her main activities at the Day Centre have included talking to members, providing much needed social contact, making teas and coffees and generally helping out. She really enjoys talking to members and learning about their lives (one member told her about their experience during the war of drawing sea maps)! Jade will be really missed when she finishes her work experience next month and everyone at the Day Centre wishes her well as she completes her diploma in 2019, after which she is thinking about teaching or nursing. Outside of her studies Jade enjoys socialising with friends, working at a garden centre and meeting new people! Here is Jade with some of our lovely volunteers (Nancy, Hilary and Rena)

Visit from St.Ivo Pupils

Pupils from St Ivo School visited St Ives Day Care Centre on Wednesday 16th December, where they entertained the elderly members to a most enjoyable programme of Christmas songs. The piano accompaniment was by music teacher Miss Barnes and the solo singer with such a lovely voice was Sissy Ford. Afterwards the young people joined the members in games and conversation which was very much appreciated and enjoyed by all. A great mix of the old and the young! Our greatful thanks for a lovely afternoon in the run up to Christmas.

  • On 5th October members went out to lunch at the Crown in Earith and on 12th October Wiltshire Farm Foods visited the Centre to give a demonstration and provide some samples of their reday made meals (the samples of choclate eclaires and lemon drizzle cake went down particularly well)!
  • The Centre also are very grateful to Mrs M Wallis for the donation of a folding wheelchair for use by the members!
  • There were also 6 new members and 2 new volunteers in October (one voluteering on a Monday and another volunteering on a Tuesday)! If you would like more information on voluteering see the voluteering opportunities page or to volunteer on any weekday please contact the Day Centre Manager.
  • The knitters on a Wednesday have been busy making “Twiddle Muffs”, a handwarmer which are great for folks with dementia. The idea came from Dementia Friends and the Centre will be donating some to Dementia Freinds as well as to a number of Local Care Homes.Twiddle Muffs 3
