The St.Ives Day Care Centre is always looking to hold events to help raise funds for a variety of projects. If you would like to suggest further events please feel free to Contact Us.
On the week of 28th August 2015 we went out to the Barley Mow in Hartford and the Queen’s Head in Needingworth for our lunches on Thursday and Friday. As usual, we enjoyed first class food and service.
On Wednesday 26th August 2015 we did something completely different. A group of 15 -18 year olds taking part in the National Citizen Service spent much of the day with us. Part of the NCS programme is to encourage social action by the participants and they elected to devote their actions to the elderly. DSC02192 Arriving at 11am, the group mingled with our Members and one or two of them were delighted to be shown how to knit. They then assisted with serving and clearing up after lunch before launching into a mini musical extravaganza. With numbers ranging from the early 50’s to rap, it is probably the first time that a ‘boom box’ has been played on the premises. A good time was had by all and the National Citizen Service should be given wider publicity for the work it does in encouraging our youngsters from all backgrounds, to get involved.
We have also been chosen by GB Gymnastics to take part in a 6 month pilot project using chair based exercises (with a difference). This programme, designed in Japan and South Korea, has proved very successful in helping those with Dementia and similar conditions, that it has been rolled-out in all care homes and day centres throughout those countries. We are the only Day Care Centre to be chosen/nominated for the project, along with two Care Homes in the UK. The project will be evaluated at the end of the period and with the assistance of Care UK it is hoped to apply for government funding to institute the programme in this country.    Watch this space!
We recently had a visit from “Zoolab”! This is a group interested in exotic animals and kindly show these at schools, day centres and care homes etc. The “Zoolab” ranger brought two snakes, a tree frog and a range of other really interesting little critters! The members showed great interest and asked the Rangers many interesting questions.
We have engaged the services of some new entertainers for the members enjoyment! “Jukebox Legends” and really professional and have put on several splendid afternoon shows for the members and will feature regularly in future programmes.
The Centre has recently received a kind gift a range of new song books and a new pianist has found us so we anticipate lots of “sing-a-longs” in the afternoons!
